In their publication Roden et al. tried to assess drivers of beta diversity in reef-associated soft-bottom environments. They have used data from the Triassic Cassian Formation in the Dolomites, Northern Italy and a Recent reef basin (Northern Bay of Safaga, Red Sea, Egypt). The authors postulate that priority effects and the biotic structuring of the sediment may be key determinants of beta diversity.
